Dr. Shafiullah Soomro

Biography

Dr. Shafiullah Soomro is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Linnaeus University, Sweden, in the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology. His research focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and Explainable AI, with applications in environmental sustainability, medical imaging, and intelligent systems. Dr. Soomro received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Chung-Ang University, South Korea (2018), where his dissertation centered on developing advanced image segmentation frameworks for medical image analysis. His doctoral research produced several peer-reviewed publications in top journals such as Expert Systems with Applications, PLOS ONE, and IEEE Access, and conference proceedings including ICIP and DICTA. Before joining Linnaeus University, Dr. Soomro served as Associate Professor and Head of Curriculum Development in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST), Pakistan. In that role, he played a key part in designing AI-focused academic programs and mentoring master’s and doctoral students. At Linnaeus University, he contributes to international research initiatives such as ForestMap (EU–Swedish National Forest Program) and Tree Volume Measurement by AI (Vinnova-funded Sweden–Brazil collaboration). His work integrates deep learning, transfer learning, and remote sensing to develop intelligent systems for forest attribute mapping, tree volume estimation, and sustainable resource management. Dr. Soomro has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers and actively reviews for leading journals, including IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and Scientific Reports. His teaching portfolio spans Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Software Engineering, emphasizing project-based, research-led learning. Beyond academia, Dr. Soomro leads the IAI Tech initiative, focused on industrial AI solutions for manufacturing, automation, and predictive analytics. His vision combines scientific excellence with societal relevance — using AI to advance both technology and sustainability.
