Research

The research in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Department is focused on variety of domains including image/video understanding, sentiment analysis, action recognition, speech recognition, biometrics recognition, cyber security, to name a few. Currently, several PhD and Master students are working under the supervision of our faculty members on diverse topics in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The AI Department has strong industrial collaboration and linkages with foreign research institutes. We are working on several projects under these collaborations. Some of the projects, worth mentioning, include the following.

  • A Smart System for Retrieving Unpaid Tax Vehicles using Deep Learning
  • A Deep Learning Based Weed Detection and Classification System for Wheat and Cotton Crops in Sindh Province
  • Smart Surveillance System for Students Monitoring in Academic Institutes
  • An Automated Framework for Road Anomaly Detection Using Machine Learning
  • Human Action Recognition Using Deep Learning
  • Movie Tags Prediction and Segmentation Using Deep Learning

The AI Department welcomes further industrial-academic collaboration to extend its research scope. At the same time, we also look forward to work with energetic, dynamic, and skilled researchers working on different topics in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Research Areas

Technically, computer vision encompasses the fields of image/video processing, pattern recognition, biological vision, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, mathematical modeling, statistics, probability, optimization, 2D sensors, and photography.

The current plethora of imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MR), computed tomography (CT), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and ultrasound provide great insight into the different anatomical and functional processes of the human body.

Video Understanding involves the automatic interpretation of digital video using computer algorithms. Although humans are readily able to interpret digital video, developing algorithms for the computer to perform the same task has been highly evasive and is now an active research field.

Remote sensing enables monitoring of land, atmosphere expanses and ocean representing data that cannot be captured using any other means. A vast amount of information is generated by remote sensing platforms that need to be analyzed accurately.

Deep learning is a subset of machine learning, which is essentially a neural network with three or more layers. These neural networks attempt to simulate the behavior of the human brain—albeit far from matching its ability—allowing it to “learn” from large amounts of data.

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks. These cyberattacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users; or interrupting normal business processes.

Sentiment Analysis (SA) is an ongoing field of research in text mining field. SA is the computational treatment of opinions, sentiments and subjectivity of text. It is the process of determining whether a piece of writing is positive, negative or neutral.

Biometric recognition is an information system that allows the identification of a person based on some of its main physiological and behavioral characteristics. Biometric recognition in-the-wild is a challenging topic with numerous open issues.
